APPFS: Advancing Food Security Through Phosphorus Stewardship in Africa

The African Phosphorus Platform for Food Security (APPFS) continues to grow as a continental platform dedicated to promoting sustainable phosphorus stewardship as a key driver of food security, soil health, and agricultural resilience across Africa. As African agriculture faces mounting challenges—including soil degradation, rising fertilizer costs, climate variability, and food insecurity—APPFS brings together research institutions,
policymakers, development organizations, and industry stakeholders to strengthen  collaboration and turn scientific knowledge into practical solutions.
Over the past year, the platform has evolved from a strategic concept into an Africa-led coordination and knowledge-sharing mechanism. Today, APPFS counts ten Founding Members, including leading regional and international organizations working across agriculture, soil health, and fertilizer systems.

APPFS focuses on four key areas: strengthening coordination among stakeholders, translating research into policy action, improving phosphorus monitoring and data systems, and aligning investments to support sustainable soil restoration and food system transformation.

With growing institutional engagement and stronger partnerships across the continent, APPFS is now entering a new phase focused on active participation in policy development, investment processes, and collaborative initiatives that support Africa’s long-term foodsecurity goals.
